Dear Brothers and Sisters of the North Jackson Church of Christ,
As you may know, our nation is one of several that are being significantly impacted by an unprecedented pandemic virus known as COVID-19 or the Coronavirus. More than 2,200 cases have been reported in all 50 states with at least 50 fatalities at the present time. A state of emergency has been declared in the state of Tennessee and nationwide as of Friday evening (3/13/2020).
Many news reports are emphasizing this outbreak as a serious health threat. Other media outlets insist the risk is minimal. Rather than simply relying on media reports and rumors, the elders have spent significant time this past week praying, consulting with local medical personnel and government officials, and discussing this serious health crisis, with special concern for its impact on our Christian family and neighbors in the community.
Based on the critical information we received, the elders of the North Jackson church of Christ have decided to suspend public worship assemblies and all activities (youth, Bible study, visitation, etc.) for the following two weeks (3/15/2020 – 3/28/2020). We will continue to assess the health threat level with medical professionals and government officials and make additional decisions as the situation develops. As time approaches, we will let you know about the plans for service Sunday 3/29/2020
We ask that you confine yourself at home as much as possible. We also ask that each family convene at home on these next two Lord’s days and spend time in family prayer and devotion to our God.
In our judgment, this decision is the most prudent course of action at this time. Our reasons are based on the assessments and recommendations of the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and local medical professionals. The most effective way to combat this extremely aggressive and deadly infection is to avoid congregating in large groups and maintaining isolation as much as possible.
The COVID-19 virus remains an extremely communicable disease. Medical professionals report that those most susceptible to death are the elderly and those with existing health issues. While, it appears at this time young people are less at risk of serious complications, they may be more likely to spread the virus to others because of fewer apparent symptoms of infection.
We recognize that throughout history, Christians have been under the threat of death and persecution from various enemies. At times, they’ve sheltered in homes, secret locations, or even catacombs. Some may be concerned that suspending public worship services because of a virus is a compromise of faith.
It is, perhaps, one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make. It goes against every spiritual impulse for us as an eldership. However, our decision is not a reaction to spiritual persecution or motivated by convenience. It is a measured response to an imminent threat to the health and welfare of our members, especially our elderly.
We beg for your prayers—on behalf of our congregation, our community, our nation, and the world.
We will continue to remain in close contact with health and government resources, as well as all of our members, in the weeks to come. Our office will remain open during the week. We request no visits be made to the office during these work hours. If any member needs assistance during this difficult time, please contact our office by phone or email, and we will do whatever we can to help you.
May God Bless you, the Church, our nation and other countries.
With our love,
